Vestibular Physiotherapy

Vestibular therapy is a specialized form of physiotherapy used to assess and treat symptoms caused by vestibular disorders. Assessment and treatment often involves manual head/body maneuvers, analyzing ocular (eye) movement patterns as well as balance/stability.

Who Can Benefit From Vestibular Physiotherapy?

  • Individuals experiencing dizziness or vertigo
  • People with balance disorders
  • Those recovering from inner ear infections or vestibular neuritis
  • Individuals with motion sensitivity or travel-related dizziness
  • People with Meniere's disease
  • Individuals with neurological conditions affecting balance
  • Post-concussion patients with balance issues
  • Those with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
  • Seniors aiming to maintain or improve balance and stability

Common Vestibular Symptoms

  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Nausea
  • Vomitting
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Brain Fog
  • Visual Deficits
  • Neck Tension

How Do You Treat Vestibular Disorders?

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo can be treated with a high success rate using vestibular head/body maneuvers. These maneuvers often involve quick, and very specific head/body movements which are meant to re-locate crystals within the vestibular system that have been dislodged.

Other forms of treatment may include manual therapy to reduce neck tension and improve mobility, ocular/habituation exercises, gaze stabilization exercises, and/or balance and stability exercises.

Lastly, co-ordination and management with other medical professionals may be the required course of action.
